Understanding Health Insurance Coverage for Hearing Aids: What You Need to Know Before Your Next Audiology Visit

12/18/2024 | Insurance, Patient Resources

Navigating your insurance coverage can be frustrating and stressful; with deductibles to meet, credentials to fit, and so much fine print to sift through, it’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack!

When it comes to hearing aids and coverage for hearing care, many policies have differing levels of coverage depending on the severity of your hearing loss, what hearing aids you’re looking to get, and how much of the cost can be taken care of by insurance.

Hearing aids aren’t just there to help your hearing – they’re an investment into your holistic health, with proven benefits to your balance, cognition, memory, and even your lifespan. Hearing aids are crucial to help improve your quality of life!

We often get some common questions about hearing aids and health insurance regarding coverage and benefits, so to help address them all at once, we gathered some of your burning questions to answer here.

Does My Insurance Cover Hearing Aids?

The most common question we get asked regarding hearing aids is whether insurance will cover them. Unfortunately, there’s no right answer – every policy is different as to what they do and do not cover.

Some policies, like Medicare, only cover hearing exams and not hearing aids, while others, like United Healthcare, do cover hearing technology as well.

To cover as many bases as we can, we put out several insurance-focused blogs that go into more detail for the different plans we’re partnered with, including Medicare, Cigna, United Healthcare, and more.

Am I Restricted in Who I Can See for Hearing Healthcare with My Policy?

Some policies require you to remain in-network when seeing audiologists or hearing care professionals for your hearing aids, while others offer freedom of choice regarding your healthcare provider.

We partner with multiple major insurance companies to ensure you’re free to get the care that you need most from our team. If you’re not sure whether your policy will work with us, feel free to contact our insurance specialist for more info.

Do I Need to Meet a Deductible to Get Coverage for Hearing Aids? If So, How Much?

Some policies require a certain amount of the cost to be paid before the coverage kicks in; this differs from policy to policy, where some require the deductible to be met and some do not.

For example, Medicaid Texas covers hearing aids and hearing tests, as well as other services, but only for those with binaural hearing aid fittings, as those with monoaural hearing aid fittings (one hearing aid versus two) will not qualify for coverage.

We’d be happy to go over your policy with you if you need help reading through it!
