Should I Get My Hearing Tested in My 50s?

08/13/2024 | Hearing Test, Patient Resources

There’s no shame in having hearing loss challenges, regardless of your age. What matters is how you look after your hearing so that, as you get older, you can rest assured that your hearing will stay healthy.

Hearing loss isn’t on anyone’s radar until it starts to affect our day-to-day lives. If you’re reading this, perhaps you’ve noticed some struggles hearing: turning the TV up louder, asking for repetition, feeling stressed or fatigued from trying to listen…

But you surely can’t have a hearing loss – you’re in your fifties, and your parents or grandparents didn’t deal with hearing loss until much later. Maybe everyone else is just quieter. Right?

There’s no shame in having hearing loss challenges, regardless of your age. What matters is how you look after your hearing so that, as you get older, you can rest assured that your hearing will stay healthy.

Hearing loss can happen to anyone – and professional hearing care can help you take control of your hearing health.

Sometimes, external factors like infections or diseases can lead to hearing loss. This is more common in small children and babies as their immune systems build with their age.

However, the second most common form of hearing loss after presbycusis (age-related hearing loss), is noise-induced hearing loss, caused by exposure to loud noise over prolonged time periods. Especially now that young people are using their headphones and personal devices, turning up the volume for loud music…

Of course, there’s no shame in hearing loss. In fact, we see it as a positive: it means that you’ve been living a loud and exciting life, filled with live performances, busy environments, and lots of fun. It’s not a sign of age—it’s a sign that you’ve lived!

How Can Professional Hearing Care Help Me?

Upon realization of a hearing loss challenge, many people wait up to seven years before addressing it with a professional. That’s seven years of missing conversations and parts of your favorite shows and songs, not to mention the adverse health effects that untreated hearing loss can have on the rest of your body.

Getting your hearing tested and cared for not only helps your ears but also your physical and mental health. Hearing loss has been linked to balance disorders, mental health ailments, dementia, and cognitive decline – but with just one comprehensive hearing assessment, you’re well on the way to helping your hearing improve.

No one’s jumping at the chance to get their hearing tested; after all, what if they need hearing aids? Hearing aids have long been stigmatized as a negative sign of getting older, thanks to their less-than pretty caricatures from the past. That stigma is changing – nowadays, advanced hearing aid technology is much more streamlined and powerful, not to mention more discreet.

I personally have seen so many patients come in for their first visit feeling skeptical and even uneasy about getting their hearing tested, not thinking they need hearing care yet at their young age. Those same people always leave with a skip in their step after seeing what they need to succeed with their hearing care – it’s relieving for both patient and practitioner to see!

Nobody likes asking for help. But if you’ve read this far, you’re already on the first few steps of your hearing health journey.
