Does Humana Insurance Cover Hearing Aids?

12/01/2020 | Hearing Aids, Insurance, Patient Resources

Not only do those who have a hearing loss miss out on the magical everyday sounds that make life richer and more rewarding, but the condition also contributes to a reduction in mental and physical health.

Johns Hopkins researchers note that leaving a hearing loss untreated raises the risks of mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, and contributes to cognitive decline leading to the early onset of dementia.

Among the most effective treatment options with the most advantages to those with a hearing loss are hearing aids.

Even though modern digital technology has removed most of the old stigmas associated with wearing hearing aids, many individuals with hearing loss still shy away from them because they are expensive.

That’s why it is common for my Abilene patients to ask me whether their insurance will cover their hearing aids’ costs.

To provide clarity for those with Humana Insurance, here is a summary of the benefits you might expect from your policy.

Humana’s Coverage Of Hearing Aids And Hearing Care

The majority of patients with a hearing loss are within the age group that qualifies for Medicare insurance, with about 1/3 of those with a hearing loss being between ages 65 and 74 and close to half over the age of 75.

However, your original Medicare coverage includes no assistance to help pay for hearing care or hearing aids, leaving many with a hearing loss without the means to invest in better hearing.

Humana Insurance offers Medicare supplement coverage to fill in the gap.

HumanaChoice (PPO)

There are three alternative levels of HumanaChoice Medicare Advance plans available. All three are preferred provider organization (PPO) types, providing a wider range of choices and fewer limitations when choosing your hearing care provider.

If you are enrolled in one of the HumanaChoice supplement programs and choose a provider approved by their network, then you can expect to receive the following benefits:

  • $45 copayment for Medicare-covered benefits
  • No copayment for standard hearing evaluations (one annually)
  • No copayment for hearing aid fittings and assessments (3 visits per year)
  • Authorization is required before your hearing assessment
  • Hearing aid copayments $399 (advanced level instruments) or $699 (premium level instruments) maximum of 2 per year

If you use an out-of-network hearing care provider, you can expect coverage to remain unchanged, but limits and restrictions apply, and copays are slightly higher.

Non-Medicare Plans

Most private insurance companies do not provide coverage for hearing aids without adding riders. However, in compliance with laws in the state of Texas, Humana’s non-Medicare plans do provide hearing care and hearing aids coverage for those ages 18 and under.
