Auracast Technology and What It Means for the Future of Hearing Aids

09/02/2024 | Hearing Aids, Patient Resources

Was the last concert or live event you went to lack the thrill it used to have?

Being surrounded by loud noise and excitement is something we all look forward to when we go to concerts, theaters, and other spaces with live entertainment, but perhaps you’ve noticed a slightly less fun experience last time you went out on the town.

You’re not alone – in fact, Hear It reports that 94% of participants in a UK survey had a poor experience in theaters and concert halls. Assisted listening systems can help individuals with hearing loss challenges, but these systems come with limitations like high cost for low quality and a lack of privacy.

That’s where Auracast comes in, named “the next generation of Bluetooth.”

What Is Auracast?

Auracast from Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group) is supported by Bluetooth LE Studio (Bluetooth 5.2) and works as a low-energy Bluetooth standard introduced in 2022.

With the power of Auracast’s Bluetooth LE audio, you can stream audio to large numbers of people in public spaces, including movie theaters, concert halls, conference centers, and more.

There are multiple benefits for Auracast’s capabilities in public spaces.

Sharing Audio
You can now share your audio with multiple listeners if their smartphone, tablet, or laptop is compatible with yours.
Unmuting Public Broadcasts
Curious about what’s playing on the TV at the gym, the bar, or the airport lounge? Your LE audio-compatible device will allow you to hear those muted TVs.
Improving Your Listening Experience
Individuals with hearing aids can use Auracast to augment their listening experience in public spaces, including multi-language support for a simulcast in a different language.
Broadening Your Range of Deployment
Auracast is less pricey than loop systems; it’s more likely to be deployed in more places so that you can enjoy a better listening experience.

What about My Hearing Aids?

Auracast, like your hearing aids, is working hard to improve your ability to hear in busy public spaces. Right now, hearing aid wearers need to use smartphones as a go-between to help them connect to assistive listening systems.

Eventually, hearing aids will be able to connect to Auracast with the push of a button, but for now, until your hearing aid manufacturer upgrades to LE Audio as a standard for their technology, your hearing aids will work alongside Auracast to help your listening experience.

A Better Listening Experience Is Coming

We’re excited to see how Auracast revolutionizes the world of hearing care for people like you that wear hearing assistive devices.
